BZA to meet on Tuesday; public can participate in City Hall or via Zoom

*** UPDATE ***

Milton's Board of Zoning Appeals held a successful meeting Tuesday evening in City Hall's Council Chambers.

Board members approved all four items under consideration with conditions. To watch the meeting in full, click HERE.

Milton’s next Board of Zoning Appeals meeting – the group’s first in months – will take place on Tuesday, June 16, with a few twists.

Recent meetings for this and other City of Milton boards and committees had been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet as statistics have stabilized, the City – like the State of Georgia – has begun opening back up again. Earlier this month, Milton’s City Council convened once more in City Hall while also giving people the opportunity to offer “public comment” via Zoom or email, or to watch on the City’s Facebook page. Tuesday’s BZA meeting will follow the same model.

The Board’s members will meet on Tuesday, starting at 6 p.m., in City Hall’s Council Chambers. The public can come, too, though several things will be done to promote social distancing including:
1) Spacing out seating around the room, so everyone is at least 6 feet apart
2) Staggering times for each agenda item – so people don’t have to be in City Hall waiting
3) Utilizing a new app to can text people when their relevant item comes up
4) Broadcasting the meeting live on the City’s Facebook page,
5) Allowing people to “participate” using Zoom (in addition to in person). The link for this particular meeting is, and we’ve provided detailed instructions on using it below

Especially because of this meeting’s unique circumstances, we also wanted to summarize the items on the agenda in advance. This is part of the City’s overall effort to be informative and transparent.

The Board will consider the following requests specifically:

1) To reduce from 50 to 25 feet the “rear yard setback” – i.e. the amount of space between a structure and the property line in the back of a yard – at 870 Owens Lake Road.

2) To allow both an existing and proposed structure – in both cases, barns – to be in the “front yard” of 330 Dorris Road.

3) To allow a storage garage in the front yard at 600 Hickory Flat Road.

4) To permit a pool cabana within the side yard setback of 1049 Summit View Lane.

Follow and participate in the meeting

On a computer or smartphone using the Zoom app:

There will be several opportunities for citizens to provide their "public comment." Board members will reference these opportunities during the meeting. Here is how to make a "public comment":

1. Click on "Raise Hand" in the Zoom app.
2. The moderator will call on commenters based on the order in which they "raised their hand."
3. Each commenter should unmute themselves and then speak. Please state your name and address before giving your comment.

On a phone not using the Zoom app:
When the meeting starts, you should be able to hear the Mayor, City Council members, and City Clerk.

You will be able to "comment" the same times as those using the Zoom app. Here's how to do it:
1. To make a "comment," dial *9. (This is equivalent to the "Raise Hand" feature.)
2. Wait to be called upon. The moderator may reference the last 3 digits of your phone number.
3. In order to speak, you'll need to unmute yourself by pressing *6.

On whatever device
• Once the "public comment" portion concludes for a particular item, no one (outside the mayor, Council members, and City staff) will be able to make remarks about it.
• If you wish to comment on a different item, you will need to "Raise Hand" or dial *9 when that item comes up.

If you have technical or procedural questions before or during the meeting, you can ask them using the Q&A component in the Zoom app.
