Chief of Police

Chief of Police George

George "Rich" Austin was appointed the new chief of the City of Milton Police Department in January 2017.

With more than 25 years experience in law enforcement, Austin has served in a variety of patrol, administrative and leadership positions over the course of his career. Prior to joining the City of Milton, Austin served as the Captain of Internal Affairs with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in N.C.

From his early days as a patrol officer in the small town of Pineville, N.C., located just outside of Charlotte, to his lengthy and highly decorated tenure with the city of Charlotte, he has demonstrated a commitment to building community partnerships, empowering staff and operating with transparency. He has extensive experience in public engagement, forging true partnerships between the police department and the community, and improving the quality of life for all residents.

Austin is currently pursuing his Doctor of Public Administration, and earned his Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati. In addition, he holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and received his undergraduate degree in criminal justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
