The Milton Fire Marshal’s Office focuses on life-safety initiatives beyond the traditional fire suppression activities of the department.
The Fire Marshal coordinates: public education campaigns; pre-occupancy plan review and inspections of certain new buildings; annual re-inspections of many existing buildings; and fire investigations. Matt Marietta, Ph.D serves as the Fire Marshal and Emergency Manager for the City of Milton. He brings more than 18 years of broad experience in public safety. Among other competencies, he is certified and experienced as a fire inspector, public educator, fire investigator, public information officer, emergency management program director and firefighter. He also holds police basic, intermediated, advanced and management certificates, and is a 2004 graduate of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police Chief Executive Training Class.
In addition, he has achieved the designation of Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) through the International Association of Emergency Managers and is a Chief Fire Officer designee (CFO).
Marietta earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wheaton College, a graduate-level certificate in justice administration from Columbus State University, a graduate certificate in disaster management from Georgia State University, a master's degree in political science from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. in political science from Georgia State University, with a dissertation focusing on the impact of comprehensive emergency management theory on humanitarian intervention. He is also a published author on the subjects of emergency management and public safety administration.
